For some, social media can be intimidating. But think of
social media like dating – you will never find your ideal mate (of customer) if
you don’t put yourself out there, even if doing so could potentially open you
up to rejection – or criticism. For businesses, this could mean exposing itself
to flaws and open criticism for everyone to see. However, just because you
don’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not already out there.
My parents-in-law had
a non-profit organization, which included a thrift store. Although business was never great, the store
did OK for itself and never saw a benefit for social media. The business didn’t
even have a working website. That is, until my husband and I became involved.
It turned out that although the store did not invite an online presence,
customers were still reviewing the business through social networks. These
reviews came complete with address and names.
Some reviews were
good (phew). Yet, others pointed at some areas of opportunity such as “great
prices, but a little messy,” and “hard to find what you want, try the store
down the road,” ouch! But now that the store also had an online presence, we
not only knew how we could improve, but could also use the opportunity to
connect directly with the customer.

With this new tool, we let past and potential customers know
what changes were made, provide photos (as proof) and invite them back! Customers
that had given up on the store came back and new ones came in after seeing that
some of the legwork had been done for them;
they could see what we had to offer even before stepping foot in the
store. Photos were shared and friends were invited to visit. This is the power
of social media!
